LHC orders sugar sale at Rs 40/kg

Updated at: 1930 PST, Thursday, September 03, 2009 LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered Punjab government to ensure availability of sugar at Rs40 per kilogram across the province.In a short verdict on a case related to sugar crisis, LHC Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif also ordered the provincial government to ensure uniform rate of sugar in Sunday bazaar, Ramazan bazaar and special discount bazaars besides open market.The verdict declared the Punjab government as completely independent in recovering hoarded sugar. The court ordered the Chief Secretary Punjab to inform about this verdict to all the DCOs.Earlier, in his remarks the LHC Chief Justice said he is not in favor of setting up cheap bazaars in Ramazan, arguing that sugar should be sold at a uniform rate everywhere.The counsel of Sugar Mills Association Shahid Karim holding the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) responsible for the crisis, said the TCP should have kept a stock of 700,000 tonnes sugar.
