WikiLeaks - Pentagon - Afghan Files

WikiLeaks : Pentagon ready to discuss Afghan files By KARL RITTER, Associated Press Writer STOCKHOLM – WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said Wednesday the Pentagon has expressed willingness to discuss the online whistleblower's request for help in reviewing classified documents from the Afghan war and removing information that could harm civilians. "This week we received contact through our lawyers that the General Counsel" of the Pentagon "says now that they want to discuss the issue," Assange told The Associated Press by telephone. The Pentagon denied it was willing to collaborate with the group, but acknowledged that it had arranged for a phone call last Sunday between its general counsel and a person claiming to be a lawyer for WikiLeaks. Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the lawyer, Timothy Matusheski, was a "no show" for the call. The Pentagon followed up with a letter to Matusheski on Monday demanding that WikiLeaks return the war files. ...

WikiLeaks to release last batch of Afghan war docs

STOCKHOLM :   WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange vowed  on Saturday to publish the last batch of secret documents on the Afghan war in “a couple of weeks”, despite Pentagon pleas they would put further lives at risk. Asked at a press conference in Stockholm when the final batch of 15,000 classified files on the Afghan war would be published, Assange said that “We’re about half way through, so a couple of weeks.” The announcement at a seminar on the control of information came after the Pentagon on Friday renewed pressure on the whistleblower website not to release the documents, saying they posed greater risks than previously released files. “We still are hopeful that WikiLeaks will not publish those documents and put further lives at risk,” said Pentagon spokesman Colonel David Lapan. “We are concerned that the additional documents that they have may cause even greater risks than the ones they released previously,” he said, calling them “potentially more damaging”. It claims to host over a million documents. WikiLeaks Director Julian Assange t...

WikiLeaks must be stopped

By   Marc A. Thiessen Tuesday, August 3, 2010 Let's be clear: WikiLeaks is not a news organization; it is a criminal enterprise. Its reason for existence is to obtain classified national security information and disseminate it as widely as possible -- including to the United States ' enemies. These actions are likely   a violation of the Espionage Act , and they arguably constitute material support for terrorism. The Web site must be shut down and prevented from releasing more documents -- and its leadership brought to justice. WikiLeaks' founder, Julian Assange, proudly claims to have exposed more classified information than all the rest of the world press combined. He recently told the New Yorker he understands that innocent people may be hurt by his disclosures ("collateral damage" he called them) and that WikiLeaks might get "blood on our hands." With his unprecedented release of more than 76,000 secret documents last week, he may have achie...
